Australia New Car Sales Increase by 5.4% on April 2009

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has reported that the total sales of new motor vehicles has increased since the peak of January 2008.

According to their latest statistics, the ABS reported that the sales increased to 72,532 units, 5.4%* higher than recorded in April 2009. However, trends for the number of vehicles sold in May 2009 show that they are 17.1% lower than in May last year.

Victoria had the highest increase of 9.6% while South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory increased by 7.5%, 5.5% and 4.5% respectively.

New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia recorded increases of 4.0%, 3.5%, 3.1% respectively.

On a seasonally adjusting the sales, May 2009 sales of  sports utility vehicles increased by 6.4% and passenger vehicles by 2.9%.
