Motorcycle Sales Fall

In figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive  (FCAI) reveal that motorcycle sales in Australia fell by fourteen percent for the first half of 2009, against the same period last year.

The FCAI reported that 55,500 powered-two-wheelers (PTW) and all terrain vehicles (ATVs) were sold in the six months to the end of June 2009.

The sale in Scooters recorded the greatest decline, falling by 29.3% to 5,592 new registrations in 2009.  The market’s greatest segment – road bikes, also reported a decline, falling by 13.4% to 20,763 registrations.  Off-road PTWs also recorded a substantial drop in sales with a 15.3% decline to 19,423 new registrations in the first six months of 2009.

Honda recorded the greatest fall in marque registrations, down 22.7% on last year’s new PTW sales. to 11,837 units.  Second place marque Yamaha also saw its new registrations fall by 16.4% to 11,393 units in 2009.

Despite falls by the top two marques, Suzuki saw their sales dip by only 0.8% on the same six months of 2008, with strong performances from its DR-Z400 model, recording 974 new sales in 2009.
